Here’s the next in our series of questions from skeptics and critics.
If God is really trying to reach people, why would He entrust His message to sinners? If He knows that not everyone will be convinced by the truth of the Bible, why does God not spread His word Himself, directly?
The hidden assumption in this question is wrong. In the past, God has spread His word Himself, directly. He spoke with many people directly, yet they still rejected Him. God spoke face-to-face with Adam, Eve, Noah, Abraham, Jacob, Moses, Jonah, and many others, yet they all rejected God in some form or fashion. So there is no proof that people would accept God’s truth even if He were to appear to us directly, and plenty of examples where people disbelieved God when He did.
Related to this is a similar objection that says something like ‘I won’t believe unless God does XYZ’ such as writing in fire in the sky, or doing some fantastic miracle. The answer is that it is very impetuous to insist that a superior Being respond to us. But even if God did respond to us the way we ask, we would react the same as we do now.
The issue is not how much truth we have or how clearly it is stated. The issue is the condition of our hearts, and whether we love or hate God. If we hate God we will always reject Him no matter how directly He speaks, and if we love God we will always accept Him.
As for why God picks sinners like me, I find this to be a very good question. If I were Him, I would not have picked me. But I thank Him that He did.
Well, an ancient text says that God spoke directly to a few people, but that’s not a certain history to many–to many it is the assumption. I certainly don’t hate God, but I don’t love him either. I’m just skeptical of him.
