Christian dialogues with Atheist

Scene 1:

Christian: As I look out my window, I see a lot of boxcars moving by.
Atheist: Yes, so do I.
Christian: This is a very long string of boxcars, because they’ve been moving past for some time now.
Atheist: Yes, this is true.
Christian: Boxcars cannot move themselves, so there must be some cause for this, and the cause cannot be a boxcar; it must be something different than a boxcar. There must be an Engine at the beginning, pulling the entire train.
Atheist: No, there does not need to be an engine.
Christian:  Why?
Atheist: Because there is an infinite string of boxcars.
Christian: But what caused the original movement, and what is causing the current movement?
Atheist: The movement has always been there, it needs no cause.
Christian: This is not a good explanation. In fact, it is no explanation at all.
Atheist: You’re an idiot and a fundamentalist.

Scene 2:

Christian: As I look out my window, I see a lot of things existing.
Atheist: Yes, so do I.
Christian: None of these things can cause themselves, so there must be some cause for this, and the cause cannot be like these things; it must be different than a “caused thing.” There must be a Creator at the beginning, causing the entire system.
Atheist: No, there does not need to be a creator.
Christian: Why?
Atheist: Because there is an infinite string of causes.
Christian: But what caused the original existing, and what is causing the current existing?
Atheist: The existing has always been there, it needs no cause.
Christian: This is not a good explanation.
Atheist: You’re an idiot and a fundamentalist.

Now, as silly as this seems, it strikes me that it is true. The theist says that everything in the universe needed an original cause, and that everything in the universe is currently contingent, needing an ongoing cause for existence. The atheist replies that no cause is needed since there is an infinite string of causes, both going back in time and currently sustaining. The debates end in ad hominem attacks from the atheists.

(Thanks to Richard Howe for the boxcar illustration).

One Response to Christian dialogues with Atheist

  1. Arkenaten says:

I think all this demonstrates is that this particular atheist knows Jack s^^^t about trains.
